Trekking in Jordan

Trekking in Jordan is absolutely spectacular – a wonderful way to explore some of the most beautiful and varied terrain in the Middle East.

And it makes no difference whether you are a seasoned hiker or just enjoy a stroll – there are walks and journeys to fit the bill in either case.

I’ve been fortunate enough to fly camp through the middle of the country, through Feynan to Petra, and the scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. Over the course of a few days of trekking it changes almost hourly, from dramatic rockscapes to sands, to cobblestones, to pockets of blooming oleander plants, and on to mountains and valleys.

If you only have a day to spare, you can descend into the Dana Valley – a picturesque location home to several ecosystems, and all kinds of flora, with every scope for a picnic in one of Jordan’s more verdant corners.

If you only have a couple of hours free, you could walk in Wadi Mujib. The scenery here is different again; a rocky valley with the Dead Sea sparkling in the background. If you go through the valley with an expert, he might just help you find some of the small ibex population.

No matter what you do in Jordan, or wherever your itinerary takes you – walking should form a crucial part of your plans. After all, it’s the only way to really get to grips with Petra!
