Beach Holidays in Africa
So many people only think about safaris when mentioning Africa – but in fact, even for those people who simply want to spend time on a beach, Africa makes the most perfect sense! For a start, there is only a couple of hours time difference – unlike Asia – so no time is wasted with jet lag. Secondly, to Kenya and Tanzania, the flights are only 8 1/2 hours or slightly longer. To South Africa, Mozambique or Malawi, it tends to be more – but almost no jetlag. Beach holidays in Africa are not far away!
One can stay in the most gorgeous villas in Lamu, complete with a skipper and boat where you can sail off for the day, snorkelling and swimming in the beautiful warm, azure waters. Alternately, stay in a beautiful town house or boutique hotel in Lamu, where you can people watch and be a part of the action – great for those who love the city life. Then there are a number of truly gorgeous Robinson Crusoe places for those who want simply to get away, but with an air of sophistication – such as Kiwayu. Smart, no-shoes, just a sarong style Robinson Crusoe places and villas are what Africa does best! Add either unlimited watersports for those adrenaline junkies, or perhaps just a boat for fishing and sailing and swimming with dolphins – which is the most amazing thing one can do!
There are also a small number of informal places along the coast in Diani which are really good value and great for famillies, or along Watamu where there are a number of private cottages and villas. In Zanzibar, we have some gorgeous hotels and in Malindi, Kenya – there is a state of the art Henri Chenot spa, the finest in Africa!
We also arrange time spent on an Arab Dhow – perhaps between Lamu and Kiwayu where one might spot the elusive dugong – for a night or two, taking in the diamond studded sky, or being taken around the Tanzanian coast and Zanzibar on a catamaran, stopping at islands and swimming and having seafood lunch.
In Malawi, based on the lake, we have some beautiful lodges hewn from rock, situated on a promontory and one can spend time kayaking around islands or taking a catamaran around the lake or spending a night or two there. There is a superb, great value family lodge which specialises in sailing.
