Non Malaria Africa

{lang: 'en-GB'}

It is still possible to go on holiday  and experience a non malaria africa – whether it is for a safari or simply a holiday that has no safari activity at all.

South Africa is always a good country to start with – as it offers fantastic areas which are non malarial – perfect for famillies with young children or for couples who are expecting a baby and don’t want to take any innoculations or indeed those on medication who simply cannot take anti malarial tablets.

In terms of safari – Marakele, Madikwe and the Waterberg regions in South Africa offer the best game viewing in a non malarial area. These include staying at private villas or homesteads which one closes to a family or a party of friends, or even staying at a traditional tented camp. The game viewing is just as good as many of the parts of Kruger. For those who are not that interested in wildlife, then Cape Town has a huge amount to offer, from Cape Town itself to the winelands, where one can stay at magical little boutique hotels with views over the grape vines and the mountains. Then there is the garden route, where one can walk or canoe or simply explore and finally, end in Plettenberg Bay where we have anything from private houses to stay in, to modest guest houses and then our favourite, a Relais et Chateaux called Kurland. North of Cape Town is an area called Clanwilliam where there is rock art and the most amazing array of wild flowers – or even heading east to montagu or staying on a historical wheat farm where one can ride and be entertained by a third generation South African and experience a home stay.

In Cape Town, one is spoilt for choice from beautiful, artistic boutique hotels to villas and further along the coast- perhaps stay at a gorgeous Relais et Chateaux lodge where one can go out and see the largest concentration of southern right whales by boat or on land.

Perhaps go white water rafting on the Orange River or go  or learn how to sail, cook, fly fish etc and there are wonderful places to stay which are artistic and cultural in the Limpopo Province and Magoebaskloof which are beautiful and spectacular and combine well with the malaria free waterberg mountains.

Kenya also has non malarial regions although these are not as game rich as the Masai Mara for example, but they offer a good alternative and the flight from Europe is shorter to Kenya than to South Africa. Some of the most amazing family properties are based in the Laikipia region in Kenya – staying in tree houses, camping, staying at a farmhouse, horse riding, camel trekking etc.

Safaris South Africa non malarial

No other country in Africa can offer excellent wildlife safaris in a non malarial area  like South Africa does. The choice is so wide – from just outside of Johannesburg only 3 1/2 hours drive away in the Waterberg Region, to Marakelele and Madikwe – these are all areas where an abundance of wildlife exists in completely non malarial areas. Then we have the Cape – and the Eastern Cape specifically which is littered with game reserves – although just a handful here have truly excellent game.

So – who looks for Safaris South Africa non malarial? Famillies with small children, (with older children there is the half dose of Malarone which I always give to my own children, with no side affects). Pregnant women – often couples who were planning on safari for their honeymoon, but find they are about to become parents and therefore need to travel to non malarial areas.

South Africa really does lend itself to famillies and honeymooners alike – the accommodation is more luxurious than any of its other African counterparts and for children, many of the lodges offer family safari activities.

Even in Kenya, there are non malarial areas – where there are spectacular views and wildlife, but then one can’t include the coast.

Non Malaria Safari

Non Malaria Safari- These safaris are predominantly either for famillies with very young children or for perhaps women who are pregnant.  Although for children these days, there is a half dose of the anti-malarial Malarone (which my daughter takes frequently) and has no side effects, some parents would rather not go down that avenue and sometimes we have had clients who were pregnant and could not take anti malarial tablets.  This being the case, there are several places and areas that we can really recommend, where the game viewing is still sensational. For those adults who would rather stay at a gorgeous, luxurious, ‘non child’ lodge, there are some super examples in South Africa, specifically in Madikwe, Marakelele and Welgevonden as well as the Waterberg Mountains. In Kenya, there are some gorgeous, very decadent lodges, such as Ol Donyo Wuas, below, where this is your private villa.

Alternately, for famillies who want to take their children, the eastern Cape in South Africa often makes most sense and there is a truly gorgeous lodge called Kwandwe, which we feel is the best that is in this region. The guides are simply superb, and the lodge has special kiddies backpacks, filled with everything your child needs to know about the bush! They make plaster casts of spoormarks, or paw prints, often from a lion which they can take home, they learn all about the night sky and what trees and plants are used for the local people for toothbrushes, loo paper as well as medicinal properties.  One can then move on to Plettenberg Bay which is close by, for the beach part of your holiday and again, there is simply so much to do in this region, it would be impossible to ever dream of getting bored!On offer is anything from canopy tours and zip wiring, bunjee jumping, polo, horse riding, elephant back rides, visiting an animal hospital and orphanage, the beach, tubing, sailing, parasailing, bird world which is a huge aviary containing a wonderful display of exotic and indigenous birds and Monkeyland.

Another country that has non malarial areas is Kenya, in the Chyulu Hills as well as Laikipia, where the children can go on a camel safari, or stay in a treehouse, learn to track wild dog and other animals, have a sleep out (a camping experience), plus swimming in waterfalls, clay pigeon shooting, archery, horse riding, fishing – the list is endless!

Either way, we can arrange the most wonderful, spoiling or fun safaris in this region, as I come from both countries myself and know them extraordinarily well!
