If somebody had to ask what I considered to be the ultimate luxury african safari – I would probably have to say that it would either be in Botswana or in Kenya. If it was Botswana, then it would mean staying at the most beautiful tented camp on this earth, in the Kalahari desert, where one can explore the desert with an amazing guide, seeing desert dwelling species and habituated meerkat. You could learn about the bushmen or san people and go out with them for a walk, hearing about how they forage for plants and learning about their culture. The camp is white and bedouin in style, with persian rugs and the view looks out over a white, shimmering salt pan. The views are simply staggering. Then, I would go to the most beautiful lodge where I could take an elephant back safari for three days. You overnight at this beautiful lodge in the heart of the Okavango delta,and the days are spent walking and game viewing on the back of an elephant – simply magical and probably the most humbling thing you can do! Stay at a magnificent lodge in the Moremi which is renowned for its fabulous wildlife, or travel further north to Chobe to do the same thing. End off at Victoria Falls – which is a truly special and fitting ending! There is nothing quite like an African Safari – the colours that dance on the high grasses as the sun rises, that wonderful smell of wild herbs – so pungent with the morning dew! That extraordinary colour when the sun rises – a mixture of pink and blue and yellow hues. The scenery – across infinite savannah plains or perhaps through miombo woodland across to a waterhole. Then, of course, seeing the animals as the sun gently warms their coats – changing from a dark to light brown, as they start feeding on the grasses.

African Safaris are the most extraordinary sort of holiday.  In the western world, it has always occurred to me how cocooned everyone is – living life with a sense of hum drum! Perhaps much of Africa’s appeal is that it takes people out of their comfort zone and then delivers wave after wave of sensory shocks.  From those blood red sunsets across a glistening hippo filled lagoon, to seeing no light pollution in the Okavango Delta – just the southern cross and the brightest of planets. Or perhaps sitting on one of the highest sand dunes in Namibia, marvelling at the sheer size of emptiness and how irrelevant we really all are. To sit in silence in the Serengeti during the migration, hearing the snorting of 500 000 wildebeest, or sitting feet away from a gorilla in Uganda, Rwanda or the Congo – observing the behavioural patterns of these gentle beasts as they communicate with one another  in strange, mewing sounds, the hairs standing up on your arms. It might be the powerful dancing of the proud Maasai people in Kenya, their deep voices echoing and reaching a crescendo. Or perhaps horse riding through the Kalahari desert, the sands shimmering white as far as the eye can see. It might even be walking through the Luangwa in Zambia, with your own private guide – every sense on high alert – as you walk, down wind from a matriarchal elephant herd. It might be the comraderie of spending the evening chatting outside around a fire beneath the stars, listening to the distant sound of lions roaring – communicating to each other where they are.
