African Safari Adventure

Its difficult to think about travelling to Africa and it not being an African safari adventure !  Each day brings new experiences, new revelations, wonderful wildlife – allowing you to learn and observe as you travel – each a thrilling, new  adventure opening before your eyes!

The guide is the most important aspect of your safari – somebody who reveals every part of this exciting world to you – whether its the intricacies  of  learning about the dung beetle and how it fits into our fragile  eco system, learning about the medicinal properties of plants and trees and the folklore attached to them, learning astronomy in the southern hemisphere – all of this is fascinating stuff!

Then, you learn to identify the tracks and spoormarks before you – finding out which animal was dragging its prey and in which direction it was travelling to the cyanide produced by centipedes.

Explore this wonderful continent by canoe, on the back of a horse, on elephant back in the Okavango Delta. Perhaps spend time with lion or elephant researchers or spend some time fly fishing from a log cabin. Take a helicopter to Lake Turkana, take a camel assisted walking safari in Kenya and go on a walking safari in Zambia.

Adventure Holidays Africa

Anyone with a family will truly appreciate an adventure holiday in Africa.

So- what constitutes an adventure? This word has so many different meanings for so many different people. It can simply mean getting off the beaten track – and not doing what everyone else appears to do. It can mean doing something different to what you would normally do in your every day life – or even what you would normally do on holiday. For others it means lots of ‘daring do’ – and this we can provide in buckets full! I say family safaris simply because one can do the following:

Kenya Family Safaris

Kenya Family Safaris -Kenya still offers the finest and most obvious choice for a family safari, with such diversity of both bush and beach, it is always a success and invariably a great ‘bonding’ session where famillies get to spend quality time together.

Certainly, for the “first timer”, a visit to the Mara is a must and, for those taking children who might be nervous about the bush/child equation, staying somewhere which has a swimming pool (something to do which is “not animals”!) and is also fenced might be a good option. A fenced off camp, meaning that precious totos can run around at will, in total safety in one of the most concentrated game regions in the world, is a good idea. A couple of camps even offer a ‘kids’ club’; Nirvana for most parents and almost unheard of in the safari world! The real hit was when our 7 year old daughter was taught to use a wooden bow and arrow made from combretum, this was put to good (harmless!) use as she became expert at fending off the vervet monkeys who visited the dining tables in an effort to claim leftover titbits.

For those with older children, or those with a spirit of adventure, the region of Laikipia ticks the boxes every time. This is a beautiful area, with interesting and diverse vegetation ranging from acacia woodland to open plains dotted with acacia trees. One in particular is  a wonderful working ranch with

Boran cattle, Maasai Red sheep and Galla goats but there’s plenty for everyone to do. Apart from game drives and walks (walking in the bush is an
excellent experience) there is also camel and horse riding. The horses were a real hit as our daughter  was away from her pony and was delighted to “go equine” again. Crucially, there is a swimming pool. We spent time in the evenings playing snooker and games and generally relaxing and chatting. There are also night drives. These are great fun, seeing porcupine and searching for one of the nine locally resident leopard of which we actually saw two! Wild Dog have really made a comeback here and some are tagged and monitored. Adventurous clients can head to the waterfalls on the Ewaso Narok River and jump into a big pool of water 30 feet below or learn about the challenges of ranching in such a harsh and untamed environment by participating in ranching activities. Aside from the game drives there are guided bird walks, clay pigeon shooting, archery and fishing as well as fly camping on the plains overlooking Mount Kenya. This is all very special and one could spend an eternity here!

And then there is the coast, where anything from Robinson Crusoe to delightful lodges are on offer, with kite surfing, fishing, water skiing, tubing and literally any watersport imaginable on offer!

Luxury Safari Holidays

Luxury safari Holidays are easily arranged in most  of Africa these days.

In Namibia, there are some idyllic lodges in the desert, where you have open sided rooms with magnificent vistas and windows in the ceilings where you can watch the stars. In Kenya, you have magnificent lodges which overlook Mount Kilimanjaro, where you can ride during the day, or simply relax and look out over these views. Perhaps you might like your own villa, set on three floors, with its very own ‘cool pool’.  Perhaps you would like your own farmhouse and private tented camp erected for you, flying in between with your own helicopter and aeroplanes at your disposal.

In the Selous in southern Tanzania, take over your own house and spend the days walking, game viewing and boating on Lake Tagalala. In South Africa, take the children to a malaria free lodge in Madikwe, complete with its own private villa where you take the property in its entirety – purely for a couple of famillies or for those wanting space as well as their own butler and fantastic guide. Then, finish off at an exquisite villa in the Cape, overlooking the sea!

In the Serengeti, stay at a beautiful lodge or luxury tented camp with inspiring views of the wildebeest migration.

In Zimbabwe, there is a gorgeous lodge called Pamushana in a fantastic, game rich area. In Zambia, there are stunning lodges dotted all across the country, from the waters of the lower Zambezi, to the south Luangwa with its concentrations of wildlife, especially leopard, to Kafue and Livingstone.

Safari to Botswana

A safari to Botswana is one of the most incredible ways of exploring Africa!

Botswana offers so much to the safari traveller – from private mobile safaris, with your own guide, your own vehicle, staying in a tented camp erected purely for your party – whether there is just one, two or a family of you – to staying in a wonderful, authentic tented camp on the outskirts of the Okavango Delta, perhaps opposite a heronry, so that in the right season, you can watch the birds nesting!

Jacks Camp Makgadikgadi with AfricanExplorations.com

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are hugely luxurious camps and lodges, dotted all around the Okavango Delta, as well as in Moremi, Chobe, Savute and the Kalahari Desert. The joy is that there is such great diversity in vegetation – from the verdant green papyrus which lines the Okavango Delta to the white sands covering the Kalahari desert – from the miombo woodlands to riverine forest, a favourite haunt for leopard.

There are elephant back safaris, walking with elephants, riding safaris in the Delta and in Linyanti, canoeing safaris, walking safaris and the more traditional game viewing safaris by open vehicle. The beauty is that all or part of these elements can be combined, to assemble the most perfect safari to Botswana! It is even possible to explore the Chobe River by boat – there are now several very comfortable, small boats where one can overnight and explore the waterways of the Chobe by day!

Kalahari Desert safaris with AfricanExplorations.com

Perhaps you might like to flycamp on a private island in the Okavango Delta, being the only privileged tourists, or you might like to explore the Makgadikgadi Salt pans by quad bike in certain seasons, spending time with habituated meerkats or learning about the San people and their traditions. We can even arrange initiation hunts and experience a dignified and sensitive Bushman safari, taking in the Tsodillo Hills and the ancient rock art.

The floodplains in the Delta are absolutely beautiful. A mokoro ride through the swathes of floating water lilies, roamed by Red lechwe, is a magical experience. One can also do motorboat trips and 4×4 game drives as well as walking on the islands. On one of these walks I managed to see not one,but three, Pels fishing owls – possibly one of the world’s most elusive birds. The dense palm and jackalberry filled islands of this permanent wetland are ideal for these rare, fluffy, golden caramel-coloured owls. They hunt at night, when the fish eagle has retired, using their enormous dark almond eyes to scan the shallow waters.
