Horse Trekking Africa

Africa is one of the best countries in which to go horse riding. Here one has an abundance of well schooled animals and a huge amount of freedom and space in which to ride – and a wealth of different experiences for differing standards of rider.

Riding in Kenya in the Masai Mara is sensational for experienced riders, riding alongside the wildebeest migration – cantering with wildebeest, zebra and giraffe. In Botswana, in the Okavango Delta, it is thrilling riding through water or galloping across the Kalahari Desert.

We have some great rides in South Africa too. Horse trekking in Africa offers a myriad of riding opportunities, one is spoilt for choice!

For those who are novice riders, or just want a few hours a day riding, we have a handful of the best places in Africa where this can be arranged and we also have several clinics for around a week with some of the top specialists in equine behaviour and advanced dressage.

Horse Treks Africa

Horse Treks in Africa are one of the best ways of going on safari! We have so many that we can really recommend!

Depending upon your riding ability and fitness level, one of our top riding treks or safaris is in the Masai Mara, for ten days. Here one rides with the wildebeest migration at certain times of year. The riding is fast paced and is interspersed with game drives as well. Camp is moved from place to place and it is simply perfect – you have the finest of guides, the very best horses, the greatest amount of fun, the wildlife is the best you can possibly hope to get – especially riding alongside thousands of wildebeest – and for experienced riders, this is the Rolls Royce of riding safaris!

Then we have amazing riding safaris in Botswana. Top of the list must be our desert and delta ride. Here one rides for three nights or more in the delta (and this can cater for a wider range of ability), riding through the water, swimming with the horses. This is great fun – and then the very best – riding through the Kalahari desert for five days. The scenery has to be seen to be believed. It is so extraordinarily beautiful – with desert dwelling species and gorgeous camps to sleep in! For those who want a slight difference, we also do a paddle and saddle – so it is a canoe safari for a few days followed by the same riding safari in the Kalahari desert. Just magical!

Then we have riding safaris in South Africa, too and a number of places where one can ride out for just a couple of hours during the day. We can also offer riding in Tanzania, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Uganda.

Sosian

Sosian is one of my favourite places in Kenya!  Rarely does one come across a place which is so incredibly special, so very different – and ticks all the boxes right across the board!

It is the most perfect family place – simply because it exudes informality and relaxation, the moment one steps into the farmhouse or on the ranch. For a fun filled and adventurous family, there is more than one can possibly shake a stick at!

Safaris to Kenya with AfricanExplorations.com

Firstly, it is managed by a truly charming couple, and he just happens to be one of the top guides in the country, so that’s quite a bonus!  Secondly, the house is simply lovely – large, uncluttered, informal, friendly, down to earth. Nobody would guess that in fact, that it has been designed by an Argentinian interior decorator!

What can one do on the property? See excellent wildlife, such as wild dog, leopard, lion, elephant, a multitude of antelope and excellent birdlife. One can take nature walks, there is absolutely superb horse riding, all with thoroughbreds that have been magnificently schooled!

There also happen to be camels and one can do fly camping, spending the night beneath the stars, and one can either do this by camel back, on foot, on horseback or vehicle. It is lovely sitting around a camp fire, the stars and planets twinkling brightly above you, the soporific effect induced by the embers of the fire!

Did I mention the rock pools? Fantastic rock pools to sit in and have a bloody Mary, or to jump off several feet below, then there is clay pigeon shooting and archery too.  The walking is fantastic, as one learns so much more on foot as one’s senses are heightened. There is also a swimming pool and a tennis court.

The food is delicious and this is one of those  few places that one comes to and never wants to leave! It is equally perfect for a family or an active  couple alike!

The exciting cross-country day is this year on Sunday 2nd May (a change to the normal Saturday), with the final show jumping phase on the Bank Holiday Monday.  We are always delighted to see existing and new clients there to discuss their safaris, riding and holidays in either Africa or India.

As usual our stand will be very near to the central arena and very close to the event scoreboard and main facilities. Our stand number is 85, located on the north/south roadway to the east side of the main arena.

Nicky, Hashim and others from the office here, all of whom have travelled extensively in the last few months to bring you the latest from both Africa and India, will be available to talk about holidays and safaris (whether riding or not!) to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and all the countries we feature in Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa as well as the Indian Ocean Islands and Madagascar. We will also be able to discuss our new Northern Africa/Middle East portfolio, including Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Libya.

Riding On The Kenyan Plains - Equine Exhilaration!

For a taste of riding in Kenya here is a short video made by our great friends at Riding Wild (part of SCC) based at Borana, a ranch in the northern Laikipia region of Kenya’s great central plateau. We often include this sort of riding, which is adventurous yet very high quality, as part of an overall safari/holiday that is completely tailored to each participant’s personal requirements, something we are renowned for getting “just right”!
