Family Holidays South Africa

{lang: 'en-GB'}

I have just returned from Kwa-Zulu Natal (South Africa is my home in any event) and I am just reminded of how this truly is my favourite province!

Here you have the battlefields of Rorke’s Drift – and there are some truly great lodges where one can stay- with the most amazing views, some overlooking Zulu homesteads, built in traditional style and one can learn about the Zulu Culture. Have your fortune told by a Sangoma or medicine man! Historically this area is famous but these tours are equally wonderful for children as for adults as your various guides bring it all to life! Then you travel on safari to one of three fabulous private game reserves where one can see the big 5. There are also some of the best spas and farms that one can stay on, in gorgeous mountainous regions and also places which specialise in gastronomy! There is camping in the Drakensberg Mountains with a private guide or for those who prefer greater comfort, there is an hotel which has the most amazing views plus every conceivable activity available – perfect for famillies!

For riders, there is a dedicated ranch with no predators so one can ride amongst wildlife and feel completely safe. Then end up on the coast staying either at a beautiful luxury boutique hotel or a five star resort with every watersport imaginable! For those seeking something a little different – there are a couple of forest lodges on the Mozambique border (where the water is warmest!) and where the leatherback and the loggerhead turtles come to nest over the December/January months – so perfect for school holidays! They also have some of the most pristine beaches here!

So, to conclude, for family holidays in South Africa, I feel one cannot beat Kwa Zulu Natal for scenery, culture, wildlife, beaches and activities in general!

Ant’s Nest

{lang: 'en-GB'}

Ant’s Nest is one of our favourite places where we take our own family holidays too.  This is in a non-malarial area which is really beautiful, situated in the Waterberg Mountains. There is a lovely farmhouse which one can take over as a family or there is Ant’s Hill, which is also lovely – which one shares with other people. There is horse riding here and one can ride amongst the game – the horses are excellent and cater for all abilities!

There is game viewing by vehicle and also on foot. They also do game counts, so if you want to be there for a game capture we can always arrange for your family to be involved in this which is very exciting. There is a swimming pool and there  are also more game concentrated areas where one can visit from Ant’s Nest. This is a real home from home atmosphere, the house is gorgeous and to have that wonderful climate too, is simply heavenly!

Most clients return and say that going to stay at Ant’s Nest is akin to reliving a carefree childhood – something that is so often denied to our children these days!

Family Holidays South Africa

{lang: 'en-GB'}

Family Safaris in South Africa are certainly some of the most popular – not least because of the diversity of the country. I am biased, because I come from South Africa and take my own children there each year to see my family in South Africa.

Family Holidays South Africa with AfricanExplorations.com

South Africa particularly scores with families with younger children – because they have malaria free game reserves and coastlines. Here one can have the best of both worlds. It is equally good for famillies with adolescent children – as we can arrange anything from seriously good camping in the Drakensberg Mountains, to horse riding, to going on safari, to doing some great white water rafting and kayaking, to really good sailing, canoeing around penguins, climbing Table Mountain, zip wiring 150 feet above the ground through canopies of trees and diving with sharks. With a great climate, most South African children are completely outdoorsy and seriously sporty. Add the two together and one has a simply fantastic mixture of adrenaline filled adventure and sun filled days of non stop sport – whether tennis, swimming, golf, fishing, riding, sailing, kiteboarding, kite surfing – the list is simply endless. Even if one is seeking purely luxurious accommodation – with a children’s club – at a Relais et Chateaux so that the parents can have some time to themselves and feel a bit pampered – we can simply arrange the lot! South Africa is described as a ‘world in one country’ and it truly is! It is so diverse and offers so many different experiences! From a myriad of gorgeous hotels and villas in the Cape (catering for both couples and famillies alike), to exquisite lodges situated in game reserves, with amazing quality of guiding, wildlife and scenery to country farmhouses and homesteads dotted around the Cape and Kwa Zulu Natal, where one can get closer to a family, depart as friends, and perhaps learn something about the history and wars of this extraordinary country.

South Africa caters equally for the action motivated traveller to those seeking repose! Whether its fly fishing, parasailing, flying, cooking, wine tasting, game viewing or simply wanting to take tuition in any of these disciplines, all of this can be arranged! Alternately, walking on isolated beaches, dining on lobster at gorgeous al fresco restaurants and reading a book around a swimming pool may be what you prefer!

Wonderful spring flowers, rock art, fantastic inspirational or traditional art, music, architecture, nature – this country offers it all in abundance, together coupled with a  magnificent climate! There is also a choice of exhilarating horse riding, either in the form of a safari or access to first class horses, either to ride for a few hours amongst wildlife, on a beach (my favourite!), or playing polo.

Stay in Relais et Chateaux’s   or bijoux hotels where personal service is assured,   stay in tree houses, either in a forest or on an isolated beach, where they track turtles with scientists at certain times of year,   or luxury safari lodges,  or stay at a gorgeous farmhouse  – either in the battlefields of Natal, or in the game rich region of the Kruger National Park, or in the Cape winelands such as scenically beautiful Franschhoek, where the French Huguenots first settled in South Africa in the 1600′s.  Private villas abound and we have a large selection of the very finest villas in the country.
