Walking safaris in the Kruger
South Africa offers some of the most wonderful walking safaris – both in a private concession within the Kruger Park, then adjacent to the Kruger in the Timbavati reserve as well as in the gorgeous Limpopo region.
The two regions of Kruger and Limpopo complement each other hugely – one can either do a one to three night walking safari in the Kruger, staying at a gorgeous tented camp which has no electricity, but romantically is just lit by hurricane lamps and it has a small swimming pool. The guides are superb and one often encounters rhino on foot. Then, we have a far more rustic tented camp in the dramatically beautiful Limpopo region, where one joins a set departure and walks from camp site to camp site. This is not a big game area such as the Kruger region, although there are wonderful herds of elephant and antelope.
We also have a lovely luxurious tented camp in the Timbavati region on the border of the Kruger Park. Again, this region has plentiful wildlife and just six gorgeous tents to return to each evening after a tailormade walk, just for you.
A typical day will be spent going out on a three hour walk and returning for lunch before setting out on an afternoon walk. As it it individually tailored just for you, in the winter months, you can also take a day’s walk, stopping beneath an acacia tree for a picnic lunch and siesta. A walking safari is the ultimate – where one learns so much more on foot! One’s adrenaline is at its peak, the silence is uplifting and one learns how to identify the tracks of the wildlife, learn about the dung beetle and its vital role in our ecosystem as well as discover the medicinal purposes of plants and trees.
We would recommend at least a week’s walk, combining the Kruger and Limpopo (which is north of the Kruger) for greatest diversity and contrast, or Kruger and Timbavati for maximum wildlife viewing or Timbavati and Limpopo.
We can also arrange for a private tented camp and a walking safari in the Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu Natal.
