The Chott El Jerid
As one gets nearer to the Sahara one comes across salt lakes (chotts) in Tunisia which take the breath away. The Chott El Jerid, a part of which can be crossed by causeway, is a spectacular example. The mountains remain in evidence to the north side, while the barren whitish hue of the ground gives the terrain an other-worldly feel, only exacerbated by the trickle of reddish water compared to the blueish stream running along either side of the causeway.
