St Simeon’s Church
Simeon Stylites was an ascetic Christian of the fifth century who determined to live his life atop a pillar in order to better dedicate his life to God. For the best part of forty years he remained here, becoming famed in the process. Upon his death, a beautiful church was built around the remains of the pillar, both of which can be seen to this day. In their charming setting in hillside northwest of Aleppo, this large church is the best example of the many the stone buildings and churches which seem to appear as if from nowhere and dominate the landscape.
