Leptis Magna
Of all of the Roman Empire’s many ruins there are few to match the unspoilt beauty of Leptis Magna. The city, founded by Phoenicians more than 3000 years ago, saw the rise of the Carthaginians and their fall at the hands of the Romans, but nonetheless maintained a degree of autonomy. The architecture is quite typical of the Romans in North Africa, with a full city to explore, including a Theatre, a marketplace, and the beautifully preserved Arch of Septimus Severus, all overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
