Ghadames
An extraordinary highlight of Libya, the old oasis city of Ghadames is a response to the arduous realities of settling in the Sahara. The buildings are white, their construction meticulously planned to keep the harshest rays of the sun at bay. Though the new town has been built nearby, these traditional houses are still in use when the summer grows too hot. The fortress of Ras al-Ghoul is not far away either – a perfect vantage point to watch sunset descend on the desert.
