Wadi Rum
Jordan’s most famous stretch of desert evokes memories of Lawrence’s campaign in Arabia in the early part of the 20th century. The Hejaz railway runs through these parts, but soon one descends into Rum and feels a long way from civilisation. This is not a desert with the perfect dunes of the Sahara; rather it is celebrated for the red-hued rock formations which protrude randomly across the landscape, and the devilishly coloured sands which run through it.
