Petra
John William Burgon’s famous couplet which describes Petra as a ‘red rose city half as old as time’ may not be strictly accurate, but this city in the valley has recently been voted as one of the new seven wonders of the world, a testament to the scale and majesty of the ruins. To see the iconic images of the Treasury and the Monastery in the flesh is reason enough to visit here, but a couple of days walking through Petra will keep revealing new and exciting parts of the city, from the Royal Tombs in the late afternoon, to the magnificent vistas from the High Place of Sacrifice or the mosaics on the floor of the recently-discovered Babylonian Church. Petra is the reason that many first think of a visit to Jordan, and it does not disappoint.
