Botswana offers quite a bit of choice for a family safari with relatively young children. The great thing is that many of the camps close to a particular family which allows greater flexibility both with taking children of a younger age as well as in terms of activity. There is so much to do! Top of the pops goes to a camp which is closed to your family in the Okavango Delta. Here you have the most amazing Botswana guide who teaches your children how to read the night sky, which direction the marks in the sand are heading towards and which animal it belongs to, the medicinal properties of trees and plants, how to fish, how to canoe – the list is endless! At the end, the children get their special ranger certificate to say they are bushwise!

Young Family Holiday Botswana with AfricanExplorations.com

Then, we head into the Kalahari desert where you can quad bike, sleep out beneath the stars, learn about the San or bushman people and see habituated meerkats which is really great fun! You can also horse ride in the Delta for a couple of days at the beginning. You can then move to another camp where there is greater wildlife so you can build on your experience and knowledge and see all the big mammals, and finally finish off for either some rest and relaxation or more adventure activities at Victoria Falls. Anything from bungee jumping, to canoeing, white water rafting, horse riding, riding on the back of an elephant, to fishing or simply chilling out a bit. Either way, a family safari to botswana really does offer everything and has all the ingredients for a truly successful young family holiday to Botswana.

I think that if anyone was on a safari and they didn’t see an elephant – they would feel hard done by! So impressive are elephants and such a fundamental part of not only the African landscape, but also of the eco-system as a whole as they have their own important roles to play. They are iconic in terms of African wildlife – and no safari would be complete without them! Which is why, it is even sadder still, that poaching from China is so rife and we are losing our elephant population at a rate of 10% each year. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise where that leaves us – unless governments are prepared to step in and consider sanctions.I have just returned from Mozambique, in the Niassa reserve, rivalling the Selous in Tanzania as Africa’s largest game reserve, and one is hard pressed to find an elephant over 14 years of age. This has a huge impact on the elephant’s social behaviour and its ability to survive.

Elephant Safaris with AfricanExplorations.com

This is why, elephant safaris are so important! An elephant has such a complex and intelligent social structure and they truly are the most wondrous mammals of all! We offer elephant safaris in two different ways; the first is being on safari in areas where they are still very concentrated, such as Chobe National Park in Botswana. This is such a joy and if lucky, one can see them crossing the rivers as a herd. Tsavo, Amboseli and Samburu in Kenya are also excellent elephant havens, as is a park in Namibia and Addo in South Africa. For those who want an even more intimate and closer encounter, one can actually walk for several hours with an elephant in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, or one step better, spend time with an elephant herd for an entire three days or more – immersing yourself in their close knit community. You can elect to walk with them, ride on them or simply be in close quarters, observing them – even sleeping a night out above them in a treehouse!

Elephant Safaris with AfricanExplorations.com

All of these aspects are possible on our elephant safaris – so just call us and we will arrange for you to be there! With over 25 years of experience in arranging tailor made safaris by a team of specialists from South Africa, Kenya and Botswana – nobody else can arrange this for you like we can!

Most travellers are really keen to experience a luxury Africa safari – at least once! Depending upon one’s finances (as safaris are never cheap – they tend to start around £6000.00 per person or $8500.00 per person excluding international flights and can happily cost twice as much). Having said that, they are worth every penny – being one of the most amazing holidays you will ever encounter in a lifetime!

Whether its lazing idly in a hammock overlooking a pristine and beautiful stretch of beach, to having a luxury mobile tented camp set up for you, complete with candelabra and amazing cuisine (a private guide and a stunning location are a given!), to staying in a design inspired lodge with wildlife all around you – to perhaps going on a riding safari amongst the migration of the Masai Mara, or a canoe safari up the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe or a walking safari in the Selous in Tanzania or south Luangwa in Zambia, or having a private flying safari across the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, riding on the back of an elephant in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, or flying 4.5 hours to reach a fly camp so deserted that its just you and your staff and a bedroll in a tent where you can see the stars in a park as you watch the birds all come in to roost – this for me, is luxury on many levels!

A luxury African safari can mean many different things to many different people! To some, it will mean be hundreds of miles away from any other tourist – having a private camp set up just for you – with all the comforts of a hot shower, a wonderfully cooked meal and the myriad of stars above you. Add to this your private guide who shares anecdotes and knowledge and makes your safari – and your private vehicle or perhaps you may be on a walking or canoeing safari or even a riding safari. To others, it may mean a private luxury house or villa in the bush, with your own butler, again your own private guide and vehicle but with exquisite, design inspired surroundings. The scenery and the wildlife will of course, be extraordinary and when one has an amazing guide, each day is so exciting and filled with new information, sights and sounds.

A south luangwa safari is a must for anyone who is particularly interested in seeing new species, such as the thornicroft’s giraffe, or seeing a region which has the greatest density of leopard. In addition, it show cases an unspoiled africa, with some of the finest game viewing in southern africa. What the south luangwa is most renowned for, however, is its walking safaris which are legion. Here one can either just spend a few hours on foot with your private guide (and Zambia boasts some of the best guiding in Africa), or one can fly camp for a night or two, or literally take a five night walking safari, split between three camps. This is no route march – rather a gentle preamble into the bush with your professional guide explaining every nuance to you. You carry nothing except for a pair of binoculars and arrive to an ice cold drink – whether its a beer, a glass of wine or a gin and tonic! Sleep under canvas which is the best way of experiencing Africa and hearing the night sounds.

south luangwa safari with AfricanExplorations.com

For those who don’t want to go on a walking safari, then the more conventional vehicle based safaris equally allow you wonderful experiences in pristine areas. Many of the camps are located along the oxbow lagoons so one can see large herds of elephant congregating on the opposite bank, bathing and cavorting amongst the hippos.
There are some wonderful camps in this area – from owner managed lodges set in gorgeous locations with the most spectacular guiding, to lodges which have a multitude of hides so you can spend hours observing animals at close quarters which is perfect for photographic opportunities!

You could ask me where would be my favourite place to take a beach holiday and the answer would have to be Africa! For me, beach holidays in Africa provide everything! From beautiful beaches with warm, blue waters, to the unbelievably friendly local people who really make a holiday, but overall, it is the accommodation which is so unique. This ranges from huge, private villas that come with their own private boat and skipper, so the days can be spent snorkelling, water skiing or scuba diving privately with just your family or group of friends. Other alternatives are wonderful, chic Robinson Crusoe style retreats that have been made out of local reed matting and thatch – all incredibly comfortable and beautiful! There are some fantastic private houses and even boats – dhows or catamarans that one can hire for a day or a week, exploring different islands.

There are several ways of experiencing wildlife amongst elephants and it all depends upon how close you want to get!

In terms of being with elephants, the top safari must be the elephant safari in the Okavango Delta in Botswana where you spend each day with them – walking with them amongst the herd – riding them – and being part of their family. It really is a special experience!

Best Elephant Safaris with AfricanExplorations.com

You can also have around 4 hours with another herd in the Okavango Delta – with zoologist Doug Groves who explains every facet about them. This too is very special and a privilege to experience!

Otherwise the best elephant safaris must surely be in areas where one has the greatest concentration of elephants – so Chobe in Botswana – to the Tuli region in Botswana – to Samburu and Amboseli in Kenya.

Then we can also arrange for you to spend a day with researchers – this is not open to the general public.

Africa walking safaris must top the list when thinking of doing an active safari – or when wanting to do some walking. Personally speaking, I think a walking safari is so much more interesting than a conventional safari, as one learns so much more on foot – from the ecological role of the insects, to bird life, plant life and learning about, for example, walking downwind of an elephant herd – keeping in time with them.

There is no noise or pollution, just complete silence and more to the point, is the fact that the safari is at a slower pace – something we all encourage so that one can learn about the area one is in – and it is much more of a relaxing holiday, too!

The finest walking safaris in Africa occur in Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya – on a completely private basis, for just the two of you or a family. You can have walking safaris that are accompanied by mules or camels, or with tribes people so one can learn all about their culture. Alternately, one can join a walking safari with no more than 6 like minded people in a group – led by one of Africa’s finest guides.

A walking safari normally lasts from 1 day to a week – its up to you – and completely tailor made – and it can always be combined with a traditional vehicle safari too for the best of all worlds!
