Uganda Safaris

What makes Uganda safaris so different from other safaris to Africa, is a multitude of reasons! Firstly, for anyone who is searching for a slightly more ‘old fashioned’ Africa – or an Africa as it was 50 years ago before tourists started demanding 5 star, designer led lodges – then this is for you! Of course, anyone wanting to track gorillas and chimpanzees – well, this definitely is for you! Then, you have the most magnificent scenery – the most wonderful, friendly and courteous people – and finally, superb wildlife in the Kidepo National Park, where one of the most beautiful lodges in Africa exists!

The birdlife is simply stunning – especially on Lakes Edward and Albert – and one can take a boat to get close up. Then one has tree climbing lions in the Ishasha region of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Murchison Falls is quite a site to behold as well.  Spend time with habituated chimpanzees on Ngamba Island and become a keeper for the day.

There is also the opportunity to horse ride in one area.

The Ruwenzoris provide the perfect backdrop to this breathtakingly beautiful country and all one can really say, is do go there – and don’t leave it too late!

Uganda Safaris

On the wishlist of pretty special safaris to undertake in a lifetime, Uganda safaris must be right up there! Partly, because there are two countries that I know of in Africa that offer the traveller a very real sense of fontiership travel – the real thing, absolutely genuine in every way. One is Uganda and the other is Malawi. What one finds is a heady and interesting mix of educated, friendly and curious people; wildlife which is simply superb – and I am not even referring to the gorillas or chimps yet! And exquisite, breathtaking scenery – in the shape of the Rwenzoris.  There is some amazing walking to be had here. You then have extraordinary wildlife in Kidepo National Park – which can rival wildlife anywhere with one subtle difference – this gorgeous, beautiful terrain – all to yourselves. Queen Elizabeth is good too. Then you have your primates – gorillas in Bwindi and chimps in several parks. To see these creatures that have been habituated, allowing you to get close enough to study their behaviour – is simply a privilege like no other. Take that one step further when one visits Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary (pictured below) and are able to take these chimps for a walk, or be their keeper for the day – well – all I can say is, I challenge you to a dry eye in the house! I consider myself to be fairly jaded in as much as I have travelled extensively throughout Africa – but my goodness, I wasn’t quite prepared for this! For a donation (the same as for gorillas), this money goes directly to their upkeep and protection. The Chimpanzee Wildlife and Conservation Trust was set up in 1998 to support the welfare of these orphaned chimps – there are 48 of them. But, they need support and are lacking in donations and if I could appeal to anyone to look on their website and to contribute (as we do), I for one, would be very pleased! It is such a worthwhile cause!
