Luxury Camping Desert

Luxury camping is an easy thing to achieve in Africa these days – in fact – we arrange luxury camping simply everywhere in Africa – from Botswana and Zambia to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

This is often the very best way to get really close to wildlife – specifically with an encounter such as the wildebeest migration which occurs for three months of the year in Kenya and Tanzania. Many famillies and groups of friends prefer total exclusivity and want to be by themselves with their own private vehicle and guide and their own space – this allows complete freedom and flexibility. This all comes from having a private, mobile luxury camp. These camps can be erected almost anywhere within reason – close to excellent wildlife locations – we have placed camps close to hyaena or wild dog dens when the animals have had pups, or even close to a nest of a Shoebill Stork – so nothing is too much of a challenge for us!

A great contrast to having a camp in a wildlife area, such as the Okavango Delta in Botswana – is to have a luxury camp erected in the desert. Here we can offer tremendous luxury camping in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and the Namib Desert in Namibia. In Namibia – the Namib Desert is home to some of the highest sand dunes in the world, while the reason to visit the Kalahari desert is to see desert adapted species such as the brown hyaena, meerkats, oryx and springbok as well as exploring the salt pans by quad bike and learning about the San or bushman culture. Either way, these are some of the finest safaris in Africa!

In terms of accommodation, the private camps have their own en suite bucket shower with lots of hot water and  loos and  and some camps even have persian rugs in the tents and tables complete with candelabra and silver cutlery – it all depends upon how grand you would like it to be!

Bespoke Safaris

I really don’t think there is any other way of undertaking a safari these days with complete success unless it is entirely bespoke, which is exactly what we do at African Explorations.

Bespoke Safaris from AfricanExplorations.com

In order to ensure the perfect success of a safari, one has to really understand what makes that person tick – the sort of accommodation they would most enjoy – from a luxurious lodge complete with butler service, to a  small, intimate permanent lodge or tented camp in a beautiful location, to a private mobile tented camp erected purely for you. Then if you would require a private guide to accompany you throughout your safari – and if so, we must ensure they match your personality – then we need to include any particular hobbies or interests that you may have. Perhaps scientific – in which case we would arrange for you to accompany a lion scientist, or go out with an elephant specialist, or a wild dog specialist. Perhaps you might be interested in photography, in which case we would select a guide or camp which facilitates just this – camps that provide bean bags and special platforms for your camera – some camps even have a media room – and then one can even join a specialist photographic safari. You might be a keen birdwatcher, in which case we might even place you on a special Shoebill stork safari.

Bespoke Safaris with AfricanExplorations.com

It may be a wonderful family safari – in which case we would listen carefully to the interests of your children and match them – sending them to places which offered perhaps a private villa complete with skipper and private boat – or a luxury Robinson Crusoe styled place with more watersports than ever imagined!  We can arrange for you to spend a day with a Samburu or Maasai warrior, learning about their culture – or even visit a school. You may be a rider travelling with a non rider – that is easily arranged, too! You might want to sail at the end of your safari – just say the word! Perhaps you simply want something completely luxurious and utterly romantic – we have all the places at our fingertips! Whatever it is you wish to do – we can tailor it to you – perfectly! Bespoke Safaris are, after all, just what we’re about!

Safaris South Africa non malarial

No other country in Africa can offer excellent wildlife safaris in a non malarial area  like South Africa does. The choice is so wide – from just outside of Johannesburg only 3 1/2 hours drive away in the Waterberg Region, to Marakelele and Madikwe – these are all areas where an abundance of wildlife exists in completely non malarial areas. Then we have the Cape – and the Eastern Cape specifically which is littered with game reserves – although just a handful here have truly excellent game.

Safaris South Africa non malarial with AfricanExplorations.com

So – who looks for Safaris South Africa non malarial? Famillies with small children, (with older children there is the half dose of Malarone which I always give to my own children, with no side affects). Pregnant women – often couples who were planning on safari for their honeymoon, but find they are about to become parents and therefore need to travel to non malarial areas.

Safaris South Africa non malarial with AfricanExplorations.com

South Africa really does lend itself to famillies and honeymooners alike – the accommodation is more luxurious than any of its other African counterparts and for children, many of the lodges offer family safari activities.

Even in Kenya, there are non malarial areas – where there are spectacular views and wildlife, but then one can’t include the coast.

Luxury Camping Malawi

Malawi is one of our favourite countries – its offers simply everything, in my opinion. Unrivalled scenery (especially on the Nyika plateau and on Lake Malawi), incredibly warm and friendly people, interesting places to visit, mountains to climb, the best birdlife in Africa, over 80 species of wild orchid on the Nyika plateau, fantastic elephant and hippo on the Shire River in Liwonde National Park!

Luxury Camping Malawi with AfricanExplorations.com

One can either have luxury camping in Malawi by having a private, luxury mobile tented safari just for your party -whether two or more – and traverse from the Vwaza to Nyika and Liwonde or stay at a luxury tented camp such as the new and beautiful Mkulumadzi Lodge in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. Majete is one of the outstanding success stories of African conservation in an area of over 70 000 hectares, part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. One has the  chance to view many species including black rhino, elephant, buffalo, eland, kudu, sable, suni, klipspringer, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and zebra.

One can then off at the beautiful Kaya Mawa on Lake Malawi, which is heaven itself! Few places can be as special or as pampering as this – with a rocky promontory overlooking the azure waters of the lake.  This safari is for the traveller who has been several times to Africa and is looking for something genuine, authentic, charming and different – and Malawi offers all of this and more! Don’t wait to explore this magnificent and beguiling country!

Luxury Africa Safari

There are few others holidays that one can take in life to rival something quite so spectacular as a luxury Africa safari! These days, it is so easy to undertake a safari in complete and varying degrees of comfort. Whether one is looking for a private mobile tented safari with private vehicle and guide, allowing one complete flexibility  and exclusivity each day, to staying at a luxury permanent camp to the ultimate designer lodge, happily all these safaris are now possible to do!

The next difficult question would be – which country?  Well, for first time safari goers, little equals East Africa with its large, infinite savannah plains and concentrations of wildlife, to the delights of Zambia which is uncommercial, beautiful and plentiful of wildlife and probably the finest country for walking safaris, to Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, Uganda, Rwanda, Madagascar and South Africa. Each country has its own special and unique factors – and we are here to assist you with our wide choice of luxury safaris, all tailored to you by our African experts from Africa!

Luxury Safari in Kenya

There are few places in Africa where one can obtain a truly luxurious safari – but a Luxury Safari in Kenya must rate one of the highest, alongside South Africa, Botswana and even Tanzania these days. The Kenyans really understand an informal style alongside the most fantastic, concentrated wildlife viewing in Africa. There are some wonderful lodges in the Masai Mara, where fabulous wildlife can be seen in close proximity, especially during the phenomenal wildebeest migration. Samburu, which lies north of the equator,  boasts two of the most luxurious lodges in Kenya.

Shompole with AfricanExplorations.com

Further south in Magadi, sits the most gorgeous lodge which also has a private house and a two bedroomed house with the most superb views and astounding wildlife. It is a community based project which is fantastic to see how proactive many of the Kenyan lodges are in working hand in hand with the local communities who greatly benefit from their existence.

Laikipia also has its fair share of drop dead gorgeous lodges and houses  set in the dramatic landscape of the Laikipia escarpment. Many of these lodges are informal and homely but with the most tasteful of touches everywhere. This area is particularly good for horse riding. All in all, Kenya remains one of my favourite countries in Africa and a very obvious first choice for most people who want to go on safari!

Luxury Safari Kenya

Luxury Safari Kenya- It is so easy these days to have a luxury safari in Kenya. What the Kenyans have is style, and bucketloads of it! Nothing over the top, just simple and tasteful, ensuring that whatever is done merely complements the amazing scenery and views.

Shompole Lodge with AfricanExplorations.com

Luxury also comes in many guises. For some, it is taking a family or a group of friends getting together and hiring a private vehicle in the most beautiful, pristine wildlife abundant region in Laikipia or Meru. For others, it is having a helicopter on standby to fly them to Mount Kenya where they can fit in a day’s fly fishing or perhaps doing a low level flight in the Masai Mara during the wildebeest migration.  Again, for some, it will be having Frette linen, the finest of freshly prepared food and good wine, whilst for others, to have an unending supply of hot water for their bucket shower whilst they are on a luxury camping trip will do the trick!

Ol Donyo with AfricanExplorations.com

There are truly beautiful houses from Lake Naivasha, t0 Meru, Laikipia and Magadi. There are architectural places of beauty in Samburu and Magadi. It all depends upon your style!

The game is simply wonderful in Kenya, one simply needs to know when the best times are to be there and to maximise it. The mobile or luxury camping is fantastic as one has complete flexibility for the entire day, doing exactly as one wishes and establishing a wonderful rapport with one’s guide. The tents are furnished with oriental carpets, have cupboards to hang clothes and proper en suite bathrooms with tremendous showers and porcelain loos.

On the coast, we have such delights as Kiwayu which is Robinson Crusoe in style, but serving lobster and crab and delicious fish and fine wine! Why not take a dhow for three days between Kiwayu and Lamu? Stay at a new luxury boutique hotel called Red Pepper. Perhaps take a villa?

Wildlife Holidays Madagascar

Wildlife Holidays Madagascar- Madagascar is a melting pot for some of the best wildlife holidays! It has so many incredible species, from over 70 different types of lemur, to many whales including humpbacks, several dolphins including bottleneck ,  fossa’s, which are a species of civet cat, hedgehogs, to a multitude of chameleons, frogs, butterflies, snakes and  spiders. Taking a walk through Perinet with a superb guide is akin to having a biology lesson, with non stop action and entertainment for several hours (and much more fascinating!). The birdwatching is some of the finest, with 258 species and is second to none!

Wildlife Holidays Madagascar with AfricanExplorations.com

During the months of July and August, humpback whales come into the bay of  Isle St.  Marie and one can go out with scientists, listening to the whales with their hydrophones. There is also a turtle researcher on another island that one can also accompany (with a good knowledge of French!).

Tsara Komba with AfricanExplorations.com

One can then end off with time on a glorious beach or perhaps sea kayaking, visiting the red and grey tsingys (limestone rock formations), or taking a catamaran around Nosy Be. Either way, this will be a truly different, amazing and enriching holiday that will always be cherished!

Luxury Safari in Africa

Luxury Safari in Africa- There can be few dreams realised like a luxury safari in Africa. This, surely, must be the ultimate holiday that anybody could ever dream of going on!

Luxury comes in many guises and as the famous HSBC advert that one sees plastered all over airport walls in Africa and Europe alike, aludes to, is that each person’s idea of heaven and hell come in equal quantities and have different meanings!

Beho Beho with AfricanExplorations.com

For some, an idea of heaven, is having the most amazing wildlife viewing perhaps in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania and then returning to a hugely luxurious lodge, where fresh roses are flown in daily to be placed next to your bath, which has views over the Crater floor, a chandelier above your head and a butler who waits upon you, even filling your bath so you can simply step into it when returning from your safari.

Abu's Camp with AfricanExplorations.com

For others, it is having a private camp erected just for the two of you, or perhaps even your family in the middle of the Serengeti or the Masai Mara, during the wildebeest migration, with millions of animals around you. Or going one step further, perhaps in the Katavi National Park, where you have a flycamp erected for just the two of you and your guide and staff, sleeping beneath the stars at night and showering beneath the southern cross!

Again, for others, it might well be having a truly sensational private guide to accompany you throughout your safari, explaining every detail to you and perhaps even be flying you in their own private aircraft, which means that no time is wasted and you can do some wonderful game spotting on a low level flight!

Luxury Safari in Africa with AfricanExplorations.com

Perhaps it is taking a hot air balloon across the Namib Desert at first light, watching the colours change hue before you, the silence simply deafening! Or even taking a flying safari up the Skeleton Coast in Namibia which is about the best thing you can ever do in this country!

Chada Camp with AfricanExplorations.com

For others again, perhaps in Kenya, to have your own private villa in Laikipia and finish off with a private villa in Lamu. Or take Prince William’s route, of staying at a rustic log cabin at the foothills of Mount Kenya, accessible only by helicopter.

Travel on horseback through the Okavango Delta, or even on an  elephant back safari in Botswana. Whatever your idea of luxury is, we have the expertise and the passion to fulfil your dreams!

Kenya Safari and Beach

Kenya safari and beach – Many people think of safaris these days of spending time on safari, seeing amazing wildlife combined with adventure and fun and then finishing off with some relaxing time on the beach. Actually, this is the perfect combination, as safaris tend to go at a fairly frenetic pace, going out on game drives for the full day or several times a day, interspersed with some really interesting bush walks. To this,  add perhaps some time on a horse, mingling amongst the wildlife, or perhaps on a camel and you can gradually see my point!

Cottars Camp with AfricanExplorations.com

Kenya and Tanzania offer the perfect mixture of some of the finest wildlife on this planet (and certainly the most concentrated game in Africa), coupled with really heady, exotic islands that go by the names of Lamu, Manda Toto, Kiwayu, Zanzibar, Mnemba, Pemba, Unguja and Mafia. Then, you can easily combine a safari in either country with a stay on the coast of either Kenya or Tanzania.

Elephant Watch Camp with AfricanExplorations.com

Kenya still offers the greatest diversity in terms of safari, with anything from walking and climbing Mount Kenya, to exploring the Masai Mara (renowned for the wildebeest migration), Samburu, Meru, Tsavo, Amboseli and other regions like Laikipia. In terms of the more traditional game viewing safaris, you can stay at owner managed tented camps and lodges, to tree houses, to design inspired lodges and everything in between! There are some gorgeous private houses to occupy which is the perfect thing for a big birthday or a celebration with family and friends! A private mobile will take you into far flung regions with a camp that is set up just for you! Then, you can either horse ride or go on a camel assisted walk into the Matthews Mountains.

Prince William and his bride to be, Kate Middleton became engaged in Kenya, staying at Lewa Safari Camp which is simply heavenly – see one of our latest blogs on Lewa.

Then, on the coast, you can either travel from one island to another by Arab dhow, or stay at a Robinson Crusoe inspired lodge in Kiwayu, or take a villa in Lamu. There are also some exquisite, boutique hotels dotted on the Kenyan coast, from Lamu to Diani and there is also the latest spa as mentioned in Tatler as one of the top 10 worldwide spas, located on the Kenyan coast.
