Holidays to Ethiopia

As one of our recently returned clients said ‘Ethiopia was amazing!  So much so that when I met a colleague of mine who is based in Addis, I tried to convince him to swap jobs, sadly he wasn’t game!’.  Holidays to Ethiopia do not immediately spring to mind when thinking of Safaris in Africa and indeed, there are relatively few game reserves teeming with wildlife, yet Ethiopia is in fact home to the world’s most endangered wolf – the Ethiopian or Simien wolf. There are very few left – possibly only 300, and they occur only in the magnificent Simien and Bale Mountains (more so in the latter). Ethiopia is also where one finds the wonderfully hairy gelada baboons, and is also one of the best birding countries in Africa – about 920 species have been recorded across the country.    There are also several endemic bird species (31). The birdlife on our last visit  included Abyssinian Longclaw; Abyssinian Salty flycatcher; Tacazze Sunbird; Wattled Crane, Blue winged goose; Bruce’s green pigeon; Lammergeyer; Mocking cliff chat; Red billed Chough; Red cheeked cordon bleu and the lovely ponching-full- of-himself Rougets Rail.

The diversity of the terrain and environment means that this country is home to a whole range of animals that have adapted to different habitats from afro montane, alpine and secondary forests to the dry lowlands of the Omo Valley and even drier Danakil desert.
