Live With Hope Centre
The Live with Hope Centre (LWHC) is a faith and community based organisation in the Motobo slum area, four hours from Nairobi, which encourages and supports people living with HIV/AIDS to live self determined lives free from the stigmatisation within their communities. LWHC also provides HIV/AIDS prevention information, education programmes, volunteer counselling and testing for HIV, income generation schemes, care in the community initiatives, youth health clubs and peer education programmes. Over the last year Live with Hope has reached 450 home-based care clients plus 800 children were visited at home by support group personnel. I wanted to let you know what goes on here at the Live With Hope Centre. They have four departments:
- VCT that means "voluntary counselling and testing" where people can come in free of charge and have their blood checked for the virus. If they have HIV they enrol them in their programme
- HBC that means "home based care" for all the people who get sick from HIV/AIDS. Their nurses and social workers visit them as well as other people who have HIV. They provide medical care, food and other basic needs.
- ABY that means "abstinence and behaviour of the youth". This programme tries to teach the young people how to avoid contracting HIV. They have many young people helping them to do this work.
- OVC that means "orphans and vulnerable children". They try to make sure all their children who are infected with HIV are happy and healthy. They also try to help the children whose parents have died due to AIDS. In addition to their usual wonderful work, they have also been home to over 2000 displaced Kenyans, assisting them with food, blankets and shelter.
